Fist of all hats off to Helmsley council for providing motor home parking so close to the town centre.
large car park with toilet facilities, just a short walk into town where you have everything you need.
This is a real gem and we will definitely be staying here again.

Stopped for a few hours here just whilst exploring Helmsley on a rather rainy Sunday.

Plenty of room for motorhomes as indicated by other reviewers. Carpark feels quite private due to tree cover.

Toilet block at the entrance to the carpark operated by Ryedale District Council.

Really easy access to the castle (operated by English Heritage), as well as to the centre of town, which has a great selection of butchers and bakers, along with tea shops, pubs, and various other independent shops.

Thank you Rydale for your approach to allowing motorhomes to park overnight. The car park is tree lined very quite and next to the Helmsley Garden and Castle. No facilities however it is a car park. You pay for day time parking 9am to 6.30pm as you would do if you were parking a car, but overnight is free. There is some negative feeling from locals and Rydale Council are tryling the idea. So if you do stop over in this lovely village please support the town with your custom as some locals think motorhomes are just using the free overnight and not supporting the town. It would be great to see more of these car parks in towns and villages set up like this in the future as they do in Europe.

Nice stopover, good access into town centre, toilets were clean. we arrived around 12 noon and it was very busy but after 6.30 more vans came in, there were around a dozen vans parked overnight with plenty of room for everyone. We will use it again! We noted that all the places we visited were dog friendly!

Quiet car park surrounded by wooded picnic areas. Quiet, only 3 other vans on a Friday night, plenty of space. Short walk into village centre for shops, pubs, restaurants, etc. Free over night, pay and display from 9am. Well maintained public toilets (not sure what time they open), plenty of bins and recycling centre.

Stayed here on Saturday night. Arrived about 6pm a few other motorhomes in. About 12 stayed in total. As others have said great stopover wish others towns did this. Tickets officials came round mid morning so make sure to pay at 9 am. Had a bit drama before we left when 3 caravans came in, by this time the car park was pretty full with cars and one caravan had to be unhitched to get round. Not sure if they had intended to stay which I thought was a bit bizzare.

Lovely pitch, level, tarmac, no hassle, view of the castle through trees. Spotless toilets in day. Charges 9-6pm £6 max Free 6pm-9am.
A few mins walk (flat) ftom craft workshops, micro brewery, galleries, walled garden & castle ( charges apply on the latter 2)
Helmsley has lots of local independent shops as well as a couple of larger names - Fat face & Co-Op Food.
We found a fab greengrocer up by the arts centre. Lovely savouries from Hunters and lovely old fashioned baking at Auntie Annes - bakery / tea room.
Plenty of local pubs, cafes and a few charity shops.
Cant wait to come back!
Congratulations Helmsley - alot could learn from you!

Just had a lovely stopover at Helmsley overflow car park. We arrived early evening and parked with ease. The ticket machine in the overflow car park was covered up but with a sign indicating to use the machine on the adjacent coach parking area, which was no hardship. £5 to park from 9:00am until 3:00pm the following day. The following day we had a lovely breakfast at Barkets Bar dog friendly cafe then later scones and hot chocolate at Ryeburn Dairy ice cream parlour. In between the ladies hit the many small shops (ouch!). Big praise to Ryedale District Council for providing this facility.

Lovely car park right next to Helmsley Castle. Five minute walk into beautiful little town centre - lovely range of cafes restaurants and independent shops. Public toilets available (closed at night). Free 6.30pm to 9.00am. Full up Saturday night, but only three of us parked on Sunday night. Absolute gem. Will return.

Handy for the town. Lots of independent shops & also a Co-op & Spar for topping up supplies. We had delicious fish & chips from one of the two chip shops.
A quiet night was had, along with 4 othercampers/motorhomes. Good for dog walking & cost us just £2.40. The notice board stated £6 but the machine asked us for £2.40. Perhaps a special occasion as a Christmas market was being held on the market place?
The Traffic Warden stopped by in the afternoon just after we arrived, checking we had the parking ticket on display-which we had!
Only certain spaces are suitable if you have a big overhang, so its wise to check first.

Again another report of a peaceful night spent at this location. Such a pleasure to be able to park up and walk into town for a meal after biking around the valleys to the north. Ate at Gepetto's - a genuine Italian restaurant serving great pasta, pizza and fayre.

Overflow carpark sign posted for campervans free from 18:30 - 09:00hrs. however it is £6 for 24hrs parking. Public toilets about 50meters away. Close at 5pm, but there are some public toilets in the market square which close at 6pm.

The carpark is extremly dark with no street lamps therefore advised to take a tourch with you if returning to the van from the pub

Lovely market town with craft shops and a micro brewery pub. Its not a cheap town to shop in as it caters for tourism. However still worth having a look around to see the Artisan bakerys. This is a quiet spot even though we had 13 campervan/motorhomes stopping for the night.

would stop over again if passing through.

Stayed overnight while spending a few days in Yorkshire. There were 7 vans the night we stayed but the car park is spacious so plenty of room for us all. It’s such a pleasure to stay on a car park that the council have officially cited as a motorhome stopover. It’s free from 6.30pm to 9am. Charges apply at other times. The town is pleasant and popular with walkers. Helmsley castle is within easy walking distance & Rievaulx abbey (both English heritage) is about 2.5 miles. Highly recommended

A good stop over for one night, with great walking and stunning scenery. A credit to the council for supporting this facility. The town needs to up the anti, the appearance of down at heel. Not clean with poorly kept grass and planted areas, weeds growing along the sides of the pavements.

Brilliant free overnight spot. Very quiet. Silent in fact! Only one other motohome in a space big enough for a dozen or more. No facilities although I think there’s a public toilet very close by. Rated the view 9/10 because there’s not much so see from the car park but Helmsley is a gorgeous little market square and the Cleveland Way wall to Rievaulx is idyllic.

Stayed on the car park at Helmsley last night. Pricing a bit confusing. If you can park on the edge and overhang the backend it costs £5.80 for 24 hours. If you have to park in 2 bays in the middle press the HGV button which covers you for the 2 bays for £10.00 for 24 hours, from 6-30 pm to 9-00am its free. Could do with it simplyfying or Mohos have a set price. Nice and quiet.Nice walk into town.

Great stop over in a lovely town. Good news is the 12 month trial has been successful and an application by Ryedale district council to The North Yorks National Parks planning dept for this site to be made permanent as an overnight area has been granted.

How wonderful to feel genuinely welcome in a UK car park. The signs are clear, the parking is quiet but conveniently close to the town with several pubs and restaurants, and a good range of shops. There is plenty to do and lots of great walking nearby.
There are toilets in the main car park nearby, but they were not open overnight, so this car park is most suitable for self-contained units.
A great place for a stopover, but you could happily spend a pleasant weekend in this lovely town.

Fantastic. Lovely to turn onto a car park and feel welcome, it's just like being on the continent with signs up making one feel relieved that you won't get thrown off. We have a 22ft motorhome and fit in bay with grass at back for overhang. Plenty of picnic tables about. Unfortunately no facilities but what would you want for free. Just going to explore small town.Price to stop after 9.oo am £1-30 an hour up to max of £6 for all day. Free after 6.30pm.
